The Paradise of the Earth

Genoardo, from the Arabic jana al-aradh, meaning “the paradise of the earth”, dedicates these verses to our Castelluzzo, Macari and San Vito Lo Capo.

It is the cradle among the olive treeswhere the setting sun finds rest.

It is the freshness of spring waterthat distils bliss and welcome.

It is the qubba of the marabout nurse Crescenzaand the memory of the wise Modestusrecalling the sacrifice of long ago.

It is the golden womb of the shoresthat a safe treasure-chest guards.

It is the dazzling, motionless path of the sunlighting the advance of time.

It is the vault of the sky reflected in the waves of the seaframing gentle awakenings.

It is the watchful eye of the banded raptorpreserving the untouchable Zingaro.

It is remembering the light of the lighthouses now extinguishedcrowning the inviolable landscape.

It is the dance of the rhythmic light of nightmarking the path indicated.

It is the prayer of the praying monkwho gives thanks for life.

It is the inVITation of the young Saint to lifethat is reborn in the fortified hypogeumto grant it infinite fortitude.

Welcome

Welcome to San Vito Lo Capo

San Vito Lo Capo is a tourist, seaside and holiday resort in the province of Trapani, in Sicily. And so, San Vito Lo Capo… in Sicily…

A land to which the dove lent its collar
and which the peacock clothed in the mottled mantle of its feathers.

Thus a Sicilian poet writing in Arabic, Ibn Hamdîs, born in Syracuse in 1056 and exiled in distant Seville, extols in inspired and justly famous verses his land of origin, and ours. And again, in a composition tormented by painful nostalgia yet vibrant with bitterness and longing for the beautiful days of youth, he writes in a splendid qasîdah:

Sicily comes back to my mind;
ah, memory that stirs sorrow in the soul!
I think again of the land that was the field of my youthful passions:
what flower of lineage dwelt there!
Since I was driven from such a paradise, I wish to sing of its delights.
Here I laughed at twenty in the carefree spirit of youth,
now at sixty I weep for its faults.

These verses can still today be considered emblematic of the beauty of the island and of its cultural vitality, which has always been a crossroads and a bridge between the east, west, north and south of the Mediterranean, an obligatory passage and stopover, forced and almost always desired, in the movements of the peoples who over the millennia have left their mark there. Thus Aegean-Anatolian peoples, Elymians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Vandals, Arabs, Normans, Aragonese, Angevins and Bourbons, attracted by Sicily’s economic potential and its privileged position, stopped here, for shorter or longer periods, helping to shape that identity profile known as “sicilianità” (Sicilianness), a mental, temperamental and cultural attitude and inheritance that has survived, with the same distinctive traits, to this day.

And, without any doubt, a fulcrum of this crossroads and a pillar of this bridge is San Vito Lo Capo, a town where the essential colours of the sun, the sky, the sea and the sand, the clear lines of the streets and houses with their weave, the incisive outline of Monte Monaco and the marked line of the Piano di Sopra crowning the landscape form the basis of a canvas that the inhabitants, with their constant work aimed at finding something new, interesting and attractive, use every day to “paint the picture that can capture your attention and make you dream of holidays in this far corner of Sicily: San Vito Lo Capo”.
